Thus far, my hunt for a nice t-shirt has not been turning up with results. It's hard to find a t-shirt with a pleasant design these days. Somehting which is not too loud that it overshadows the person wearing the t-shirt, yet at the same time, the design itself must be pleasing to the eye, in a simple way.
Ironically, once I found a t-shirt that I actually liked, there wasn't a proper size available. Anyway, in one of the shops, I saw a t-shirt that had a design which read: 'Music is the weapon of the future'
I do not know about music being a weapon, but music definitely is something powerful. A tool used to send out strong messages, that stirs up the emotions in the hearts of man, a tool so powerful that it transcends all language and racial barriers.
A simple yet familiar example would be Runaway Train, in which its music video reunited many lost youths with their parents. The song that brought runaway kids home. Definitely music videos have a very powerful impact on the impressionable minds watching it. How about songs with powerful lyrics? Lyrics that raise the awareness of various serious social issues such as child abuse, poverty, sickness and crime. A fairly recent song that caught my attention is Ludacris & Mary J Blige's Runaway Love (see the theme now?) It's actually something different from Ludacris, not the usual booty shaking, senseless lyrics type of song. Maybe that was why it was caught my attention. Anyway, in true hiphop fashion, the lyrics are very straight to the point and explicit. It tells the sickening stories of 3 young girls who are the victims of child rape, poverty, substance and alcohol abuse. Not your cup of tea? Perhaps, but this is the reality for some people out there... sadly.
Music. Even in church, it's quite vital to ensure that music doesn't turn from being a tool to becoming a crutch. A guitar does not have to keep playing all the time, and the church should not be uncomfortable with silence or the lack of music.
'But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.' Hab 2:20
