She sat at her favourite spot during lunch. Under the old tree, in the shadows and covering of the leaves. From that spot, she could see the other kids playing in the courtyard, but she was afraid of joining them simply because she knew that they wouldnt let her. She was different. Her skin was white as snow and her eyes were blood red, like rubies. She wasn't particularly hideous, but she was just different. And that was enough ground for the rest of the school to ostracize her. Then endless and merciless teasing, the looks of disdain that gave her sleepless nights just because she was special.
'Damned bullies....' He muttered as he walked towards the tree. His hair was in a mess, cuts and bruises littered his face, his uniform messed up and his spectacles cracked. It wasn't much of a fight.
'At least I still have my lunch.' Saying to himself as he walked to the tree.
Then they met. She wondered how his skinny frame could have survived the beating. He wondered why was she even alone there. Behind her emotionless face, he saw the calm and serenity in her eyes. Similarly, she felt that under his beaten exterior, there was a sense of optimism he held that was unlike any she had seen before.
After an awkard moment of silence, with a sheepish smile, he took out a bag with one hand, and with the other hand put behind his head, he asked,
'Peanutbutter sandwich?'
For once in a long time, she smiled.
