'The struggle for existence' : Darwin predicted gradual variation to occur in every species of which rapid change in variation would be also known as mutation. Variations less well adapted to survive would be left behind, in the 'struggle for existence'. Not every variation in a species will survive. Survival of the fittest. Natural Selection.

It is commonly believed that evolution is moving forward, each successive generation an improvement upon the last. Natural selection has nothing to do with evolutionary direction, species progress or intelligence. Evolution simple means to adapt. Adapt or Die.

It cant be just about survival. Life must mean much more. It can't be only about survival of the meanest and strongest. We consider ourselves to be the 'evolved' inheritors of the earth, we imagine we deserve this planet above all.

It's science versus the human need to believe in more than science. Logic rising from the shadows of mysticism versus emotion and spirituality. As if the two are mutually exclusive. Are they? I would have to say 'no'. There is room in our world for both. A need in our world for both. Nature may guide us in directions of its choosing with pheromones, jealousy, rage or similarities of design but our brain, minds and our hearts allow us to learn from life and alter those decisions for the greater good of all. Moral and spiritual choices in opposition to physical drives.
